Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad was born on 6 November 1950 in Rawalpindi, Punjab, Pakistan. He belongs to a Kashmiri family and is the youngest of his brothers. He received his early education from Christian High School and Government Polytechnic College in Rawalpindi. He then graduated from Gordon College with a law degree and later obtained a master's degree in political science from Punjab University. He also worked as an executive of Gulmarg Mills before entering politics.
Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad started his political career as a student leader and a journalist.
